Somaliland Travel Guide

Somaliland does not officially exist, at least not according to the international community.

This self-declared state in the Horn of Africa is internationally recognised as an autonomous region of Somalia.  However, Somaliland declared independence in 1991, and the differences between the two countries are striking.

Somalia is one of the most dangerous places on earth, known for terrorism, piracy, violence and kidnappings.  It’s certainly not a safe destination for tourism.

Somaliland, on the other hand, is perfectly safe to visit.  It’s a relatively well-functioning, stable democracy.

And for adventurous, open-minded and respectful tourists, it’s a fascinating and extremely rewarding place to explore.

Somaliland

Travelling in Somaliland puts you about as far off the beaten track as it’s possible to be.  Far more people visit Antarctica each year than Somaliland.

The very few who do make it to Somaliland will find some of the oldest and best preserved cave paintings in Africa (and possibly the world), hundreds of kilometres of perfect, untouched beaches, and warm, curious people who will go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

If you’re a fan of true adventure, consider taking a trip to Somaliland.
