1. Mimoza Mirissa

⭐️ RATING: 9.6/10 | 📍 LOCATION: Godalla Pita Watta, Harbour Road, Mirissa

Mimoza is my overall favourite hotel in Mirissa. It’s certainly not the most expensive or opulent hotel on this list, but they really do manage to get everything right.

In terms of value for money, Mimoza is really excellent. This place feels far fancier than its reasonable price tag would have you believe.

I particularly like the little touches like free daily coconut water that just leave you feeling good and well looked after.

Everything is spotlessly clean and modern. The rooms at Mimoza are well-appointed and designed with comfort in mind. The beds, in particular, are some of the comfiest around.

Each room features typical modern amenities such as air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, and a private bathroom.

The decor is tasteful and creates a soothing ambience, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring the area.

The fantastic on-site restaurant serves a range of both traditional Sri Lankan and Western food. Mimoza’s Sri Lankan breakfast is one of the best I’ve tasted in the whole country.

You can enjoy a huge spread of different curries, hoppers, string hoppers, rotis, fresh fruit, and coconut pancakes.

Nothing is too much trouble for the staff here who are more than happy to go out of their way to help you and make you feel at home. The hotel’s free WiFi is faster than in many other places in Mirissa.

The hotel is located on a quiet side street, within easy walking distance of both Mirissa Beach and Secret Beach. You’ll likely see a range of wildlife around, including peacocks and other tropical birds.

There’s also a peaceful rooftop sun terrace with a pool overlooking the lush green jungle.

Overall, Mimoza Mirissa is my number-one recommendation for travellers seeking a tranquil mid-range retreat.

With its comfortable rooms, friendly service, and convenient location, it’s an excellent place to stay in Mirissa.

16. Villa Océane

⭐️ RATING: 9.6/10 | 📍 LOCATION: Pubudu Mawatha, Mirissa

Villa Océane is located in Madiha – which is technically outside of Mirissa, about halfway between Mirissa and Matara. However, this is a truly superb hotel so I thought it worth including on this list.

There are only six rooms at Villa Océane and each one has been meticulously designed and thoughtfully furnished.

Each room is spacious, stylishly decorated, and equipped with modern amenities, including Nespresso coffee machines, to ensure a comfortable stay.

If you’re a surfer, Villa Océane couldn’t be more perfectly positioned.

There’s a fantastic (and uncrowded) reef break right outside the hotel, and you can be in the water seconds after leaving your room.

The hotel also has an infinity pool overlooking the azure Indian Ocean, as well as direct access to the pristine private beach.

Every meal at Villa Océane is a celebration of culinary excellence. The in-house chef will take your taste buds on a journey through flavours and spices that embody Sri Lanka’s rich culinary heritage.

The only downside I can think of to this hotel is the cost. However, for what you get I’d say it’s actually quite reasonably priced.

You’d struggle to find somewhere comparable with a similar price tag in most other parts of the world.

If I were to spend my honeymoon in Sri Lanka, this is where I would stay.

IMPORTANT: Never travel without travel insurance!

Here are three companies that I’ve used, and thoroughly recommend:

  • HeyMondo – the best value travel insurance provider on the market. They cover virtually every country in the world, they have an easy-to-use app, and their policies are straightforward and upfront, with minimal (often no) deductibles and excesses.
  • SafetyWing – if you’re a digital nomad like me, it’s essential that you have suitable insurance. It’s super flexible and affordable, you can sign up for as little or as long as you want, and can activate and deactivate it whenever you need to.
  • World Nomads – for adventurous travellers, covers 200+ activities that many other insurers won’t, such as skydiving, heli-skiing, rock climbing, rafting, scuba diving, cliff jumping, and kiteboarding (not available for residents of every country – check here).
